Happy Summer!

June 21, 2017

Summer has officially begun! We have already had a few busy (and fun) travel months that included the Lion Brand Headquarters in NJ, The Waynesburg Sheep and Fiber Festival, several local yarn, sewing and quilt stores and concluded with The National Needlearts Association Summer trade show in Columbus. During our travels we had a chance to visit with many of our sponsors, meet new and old friends and meet with some prospective teachers and headliners to make plans for 2018!

The visit to the Lion Brand Studio in NYC as well as New Jersey headquarters provided us with great inspiration and fun ideas. We will devote an entire newsletter to their newest lines in the near future.

Along the way we had an opportunity to check out fabrics, yarns, notions and accessories at local yarn and quilt stores. It’s always fun to be able to shop and add to your stash!

The last stop was Columbus for TNNA. We saw a preview of the fall collection of yarns, fibers, fabrics and notions. Many of your local stores will receive their shipment in a few weeks. We have posted some of the “pictures from our travels” here.

In the next few weeks we’ll be making final selections for headliners for 2018. We appreciate all of your suggestions from the previous survey.  In the meantime we are offering 3 books for Sweepstakes giveaways.

June Sweepstakes and Book reviews:

Blue and White, Living with Textiles You Love by Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson.

This book is a perfect summer companion for anyone who loves fabrics, home decor, quilting or rug hooking. The book captures the essence of “Americana” featuring simple antiques as a stunning background for modern textiles. Paired with new designs, the 2 blend perfectly, inspiring a simple minimalist look that is sure to appeal to everyone and inspire interior designers! Some of the quilts featured contain more than 50 or more prints but never look overdone or busy. A blue and white rug features 60-70 shades of blue and 10-15 shades of white. Both ladies are tremendously creative and the book is a pleasure to look at and would grace anyone’s coffee table.

One-Skein Wonders for Babies, 101 Knitting Projects for Infants and Toddlers, edited by Judith Durant.

Featuring a collection of patterns from many of our favorite designers, this book has many wee patterns for both boys and girls. Nothing is more adorable than children’s clothing. The book, 7th in the One-Skein Wonder series, offers projects for all skill levels and yarn types, including little leg warmers, booties, stuffed animals, cozy hats, bonnets, tiny jackets and “blankies” that kids can’t live without. The timeless treasures are appreciated when made by someone who loves them. For anyone who has a baby or toddler in their life, this is the perfect book for you!

Lucky Charm Quilts, 17 Delightful Patterns for Precut 5″ Squares, compiled by Lissa Alexander.

Join the Moda All Stars as they show how to use 5″ charm squares to make scrappy quilts with style. You don’t need a large fabric stash to make one. From table runners to lap-sized quilts, the book also features tips and tricks from each designer. With designs for every season, you’ll be sure to find a couple of favorites.

Survey Results and our NEW LOGO!!!!

View online | Subscribe | Visit us online | Archives

May 17, 2017

Our new logo is done!  3 years ago we combined the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet with the Creative Arts Festival to embrace all creative arts (and to preserve our health, strength and sanity).

Our love of crafts, creativity and color keeps us connected, regardless of race, gender, nationality, politics, religion or physical limitations. Let’s celebrate all of our interests and creativity with one another in this unique combined event! It’s still the same event, and we are celebrating with a new logo. We are grateful for your continued participation, support, interest and feedback.

Thank you for the time you took to provide us with valuable feedback from our survey last month which included many outstanding suggestions for classes and teachers. Below please find some of the results and what we plan to do to address your concerns.

Location:

This year we were in HALL C, which was the farthest hall from the escalators and elevators. Everyone agreed that the natural lighting and additional space was tremendous, however it was a bit too far to walk. As a result we have made arrangements to move the location to HALL A which is directly to the right of the escalator. The marketplace, demos and activities will all be held in HALL A and the natural lighting will be the same as in HALL C.

Signage:

We have talked to the Convention Center about adding more signage for not only the marketplace and classrooms, but all elevators and escalators. We will make it easier for you next year.

Parking:

We realize that there are challenges with parking in any city, however, we were impressed with YOUR suggestions which included:

  • Carpooling to cut down on parking fees. Buddy up with your friends, guild members etc. (We had many responses to group planning, which not only offers you discounted admission, but helps planning with parking!)
  • Take public transportation (we will be happy to provide links on our website)
  • Use the Grant Transportation Center across the street, offering $5 parking on Saturday andSunday
  • Free parking on the streets of Pittsburgh onSunday (UPMC Senior Sunday)
  • Use the real time parking link provided on our website (gives you up to date information on how many spaces are left in lots and garages)

Admission Fees:

  • Each year the Festival program offers a discounted admission coupon on the back page. Save it and use it.
  • Come with a group and save on admission with special group rates.
  • Register online in advance, even if just for admission, we offer a discounted rate.
  • Consider volunteering for a couple of hours in exchange for admission or class costs.

Some other suggestions we heard and feel we can achieve:

  • More interactive demos
  • Multi day on site admission pricing
  • More advanced classes

We’ve taken a few days to decompress and would like to send a big THANK YOU to each and every one of you!

We couldn’t put on a festival without your kind words, continued support and encouragement.

With the additional sudden challenges of StevenBe cancelling, as well as 6 last minute booth cancellations, the Festival had a great turnout, great weather, fantastic teachers, outstanding exhibitors, not to mention volunteers and staff!

The new facility proved to be the best yet! Although the space is bigger than our needs, we had ample space to move around and spread out. The constant daylight and streaming sunshine streaming in was not only uplifting but your selection of yarns, fibers, fabrics, buttons, beads, threads and ribbons easy without the need for artificial lighting.

We will have a more extensive follow up next week after we unpack and offer additional prizes that we had left over to offer some lucky winners.  Stay tuned for photos too!

On a personal note, please keep Amy Baughman, StevenBe and Mama Christa in your thoughts.
