Free with Admission

Pop des Fleurs is an outdoor installation planned for the winter of 2016, designed to bring delight and color during the dark season through handmade, pop-up flower gardens.  Pop des Fleurs will be created by the community and the flowers will be made primarily out of repurposed materials, knitted and crocheted.  Pop des Fleurs was selected as a Community Outreach Project of the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh’s Fiberart International 2016. The Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival will host a Pop des Fleurs “Pop in” Lounge along with the Warm Up Lounge. Materials and Fiber Arts Guild members will be available and on hand to show you how to make flowers. Drop in and participate in Pittsburgh’s next community installation by making a flower, knitted or crocheted. http://www.popdesfleurs.com/

A Springtime Fiber Sprite (NEW)

Free with Admission

A Fiber Fairy, a Fiber Angel, a Springtime Fiber Sprite……..

whatever you choose to call it, this sweet fiber make-it and take-it craft is open Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday, is for all ages, and is FREE with your admission. I like to call mine a Fiber Fairy. Made when my daughter was young, we hung it in the window and it would bring her sweet dreams and grant her special wishes. When my sister had an illness, I made one and it hung in her hospital room and it became a Fiber Angel to watch over her. I then made a wee one for my daughter again when she learned to drive, an Angel to watch over her and keep her safe. It is a simple, yet lovely craft,  made with roving, it requires no knitting, crochet or felting experience, and you can use it for whatever you want it to represent for you. Perhaps with the coming of Spring- it can represent a Springtime Fiber Sprite. For those with wool allergies, we will have cotton roving available on a separate table. No registration required, drop in at your leisure.

Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and Sunday. This class will be led by local fiber artists. Open during market hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

A Cascading Waterfall of Yarn

In 2013, we hosted the Knit the Bridge yarn installation that was later displayed on the Andy Warhol Bridge. This year we are thrilled to have not one, but two yarn related installations for the Pittsburgh region. The Festival will feature it’s own installation: A 78-foot Cascading Waterfall of Yarn!

18 individual panels of various sizes were made over the last several months by members of the community to hang in the lobby of the Westin to announce a “shout out” to Pittsburgh that “We Love Yarn!”  More than 75 different types of yarns were used to create only one 46″ x 96” panel that included over 500 individual strands of mohairs, wools, alpacas, natural fibers, acrylics, silks, blends, tweeds, recycled, hand-dyed, undyed, novelties and more. 18 panels will complete this 78 foot Waterfall of Yarn, featuring over 10,000 strands of yarns. Many of the panels will be gifted to CAPA, Pittsburgh’s School for Performing Arts: discoverpps.org/school,  for the students to “re-use” for an art project after the festival. Some of the yarns will be used at next years festival in 2016 to create yarn art scarves.

Stretch and Renew! With Natalie Roberson

A 20-30 minute session to help you to relax, unwind and stretch those tight muscles used when knitting, crocheting or using the computer. The fiber arts can be particularly hard on wrists, arms and shoulders. In this class we will gently work the upper body to help stretch, renew and release the areas that become tight and overused.  After this easy-to-follow set of stretches, you’ll feel as if you’ve had a nap and will be ready to go; rested, refreshed, and rejuvenated. Although these sessions are free, registration is required, space in class is limited. This will be repeated throughout the hours of the festival.

Friday: 3:00 PM

Saturday: 10:00 AM

*”Free with Admission” classes and events will be subject to a 1 cent fee due to paypal fee restrictions, which will be automatically added. Your receipt from paypal will be your confirmation of registration.

Note: A day Admission Ticket must be purchased in order to attend classes/special events.

Warm Up America Lounge

Spend a little time or a lot of time just hanging out with your friends knitting or crocheting a square for the Warm Up America Foundation. Local instructors and volunteers will be on hand to assist you. Pat Catan’s and many of our other sponsors will provide yarn and needles for your use. The squares, knitted or crocheted, are assembled and distributed to families in need and given to local shelters. Make a 7 x 9 inch square, learn a new stitch, and spend some time socializing while you do some charity work. Open during market hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the rotunda. No registration necessary.
