12 years ago, my sister and I each made a needle felted gnome. From that first moment on, we loved needle felting and quickly realized that the only limit to what we could create was our imagination. Wool was the perfect medium for creating gnomes, woodland animals, and “gnome-homes” of all sorts. As people began to see them in our store they began asking if they could buy them. We decided to take a chance and applied to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck NY. The crowd loved the gnomes and bought up every piece we had made. We had brought our first and only felting kit – the original gnome – and sold all of them as well. People were already clamoring for more kits to expand their own little menageries of gnomes and animals.
10 years later we now carry a line of 22 of our own kits that we retail at trade shows and wholesale in shops around the country. Due to the success that our customers have found from using our kits, they have begun requesting an instructional videos from us to keep their own felting journeys and exploration moving forward. We have produced 4 instructional videos with F & W Media, as well as teaching around the country. When students send us pictures, or bring us things they have made to show us, we feel grateful to have found a way to share our love of wool, felting and gnomes. Those first two gnomes sparked a light in us that has grown into this business called Going Gnome.
