Class Description:
This class will cover the basics of making yarn by hand, and will include, but is not limited to, wool selection, basic wool preparation methods, and spinning demonstration. Time for questions and discussion are encouraged.
Wool Selection – There are many different types of wool. Learn how to selected the best wool for your project. Participants will be able to identify characteristics of fleeces that will give the best yarn results. This section will include: Staple Length, Coarse, Medium and Fine Grades, Checking for Fiber Breakage, VM and Other “Additions” Wool, Alpaca, Angora
Basic Wool Preparation – Preparing the wool to be spun is one of the key elements in creating beautiful yarn. Participants will learn 2 basic preparation techniques and why they are important. This section will include: Separating and Sorting Fleeces, Scouring, Combs or Carders
Spinning Demonstration – Wheels are as unique as individuals. What things should a beginner understand in order to select the best wheel for them, and how to care for the wheel with ongoing maintenance tips. This section will include: Spinning Wheels, Drafting, and Plying
Yarn Examples – After learning the basics of yarn creation, participants will be given the opportunity to see and touch different types of yarn.
