Class Title: Twine Weaving Placemat
Teacher Name: Sarah Trenk
Class Length: 3 hours
Class Fee: $35.00
Class Day/Time: Friday, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Students will use a loom and scrap fabrics torn or cut into strips to create a placement using Twine Weaving. This form of weaving dates back to ancient times, but has experienced a revival with people who enjoy the tradition of handiwork of times past. It is also an excellent way to use fabrics that may not be attractive or may end up in landfills.
Twining is similar to weaving and shares much of the same terminology. The lengthwise strips for the warp and the cross strips called the weft are twine woven across to form a sturdy and durable mat or rug.
Because the mats or rugs are made from repurposed sheets or other fabrics, they are washable and extremely durable.
Level: All levels
Registration necessary, class size limited 10
Supplies Needed: Students will need to bring:
Small ruler, crochet hook size K or J and fabric scissors
Students will also need to supply 1 yard 45″ of prewashed cotton fabric – muslin is a good choice or a cotton sheet. This will be torn into 3 inch strips – this will not be seen in the final project, so any cotton yardage could be used.
For the weaving, I use men’s dress or sport shirts from a second hand store. Most are yarn dyed plaids and strips so you do not need to be concerned about a right or wrong side when weaving. I prefer 100% cotton shirts as they tear easily. Goodwill stores in the area have a $0.99 day on Sundays on specific tag colors and is an excellent source for materials. You will need 4-5 shirts, any size and a mix of colors.
Materials Fee: Loom will be provided at a cost of $40 – it is reusable so you can make more. This is payable to the teacher.
Homework: Tear or cut the yardage or sheet into 3″ strips if you wish. Leave the shirts intact. You can use a rotary cutter.
A 3.00 electronic administrative fee will be added for all online registration transactions.
An Admission ticket must be purchased to attend all classes
