As in all classes from The School of Mindful Arts, this course combines mindfulness, contemplative craft, story, and social-emotional learning for a fun and soothing hour for children. As part of learning about the importance of reducing waste, we will read a story about a Guatemalan girl who reused old plastic bags to make products to sell while cleaning up her village. Students will practice basic sitting meditation using a visual focus of a Calming Bottle, which is also our craft reusing old water bottles. Calming bottles are similar to snow globes (but with glitter inside) and can be used both as a metaphor for how your feelings eventually settle no matter how “shaken up” you fell an das a simple timer for a short sitting practice. (The usual recipe for the suspension uses plastic glitter and glitter glue. Because of the incredible problem of microplactics pollutin our oceans and soil, I sourced organic glitter made from bamboo and pure liquid glycerin made from plants.
