Class Title:  Handspinning 101:  From Fiber to Yarn

Teacher Name:  Jake Wheatley

Class Length: 3 hours

Class Fee: $50.00

Class Day/Time:  Friday, 2:00PM to 5:00PM

Class Description:

Have you ever wanted to transform wool into your own hand-spun yarn? In this immersive, hands-on class, you’ll learn the foundational skills of hand spinning using a drop spindle, one of the most accessible fiber arts tools. Whether you are a complete beginner or have dabbled in fiber crafts, this class will introduce and guide you through the full process—from fiber to finished yarn—while exploring the rich history, artistry, and even the mindful benefits of spinning.

Spinning has long been a meditative and grounding practice, used across cultures not only for creating textiles but also for fostering patience, focus, and rhythm. Through guided instruction and hands-on practice, you will gain confidence in drafting fiber, controlling twist, and spinning techniques. Along the way, we’ll explore how fiber arts support relaxation and creativity, making this class not just about learning a skill but also about embracing a mindful, creative process.

By the end of this session, you’ll leave with your own hand-spun yarn, a deepened appreciation for fiber traditions, and the knowledge to continue your spinning journey beyond the classroom.

Course Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify basic wool types, terminology and fiber preparations best suited for beginners.
  • Understand the structure of a drop spindle and its role in spinning yarn.
  • Use the park-and-draft method to create a single-ply yarn with controlled twist.
  • Practice the transition to free spinning, developing rhythm and consistency.
  • Troubleshoot common spinning issues, such as overtwisting, breakage, and uneven drafting.
  • Prepare spun yarn for plying and finishing, learning the basics of twist setting.
