Level: Adventurous Beginner and up—must know how to cast on, knit, purl, slip, work simple pattern stitches (garter, stockinette, ribbing), increase, decrease, and bind off.
Registration necessary, class size limited
Plain, smooth, light-colored, worsted weight wool yarn in two contrasting colors. The yarns should be identical in weight and fiber content. Note that wool or wool blend yarns will be stretchy and much easier to work with in class than yarns with no elasticity. Needles sized appropriately for the yarn (US#6-8/4-5 mm), needles two sizes smaller and three sizes smaller. Hang tags (to label your swatches).
Materials Fee: None
Make the following three swatches, using one color of yarn. Use the largest needles (see supply list) for your swatch. Bring them to class, with the contrasting color.
#1 Garter Stitch: Cast on 8 stitches. Work in garter stitch for 30 rows (15 ridges). Bind off. Do not slip any of the edge stitches—just knit every stitch.
#2 Garter Stitch with Slipped Edge: Cast on 8 Stitches. Pattern Row: Slip 1 knitwise, knit 6, purl 1. Repeat this row until the swatch is 30 rows long (15 ridges).
#3 Stockinette Stitch with Shaping: Cast on 41 stitches. Work even in stockinette stitch for 16 rows. Do not slip any of the edge stitches—just knit them on the right side and purl them on the wrong side. Bind off 8 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows (25 stitches remain). Decrease Row: K1, ssk, knit until 3 stitches remain, k2tog, k1. Work the Decrease Row on the next 8 right-side rows. Purl the wrong side rows. (9 stitches remain.) Work even in stockinette for 14 rows. Bind off.
