Class Title:  Designing and Knitting Lace Socks

Teacher Name: Carolyn Penstein Rosé

Class Length: 3 hours

Class Fee:  $35.00

Class Day/Time:  Sunday, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon

Class Description:

This course will focus on the basics of knitting lace, with lace sock knitting used as a practice case. We will use the pattern Leaf Lace Socks (AC-58) ( as an example.  It is a beautiful Spring pattern with a relatively easy lace pattern, and yet it includes most of the basic lace knitting stitches. We will work together through a simple sampler in order to learn how to follow lace stitch diagrams, talk about issues related to lace sock design including resizing lace patterns, and begin knitting the Leaf Lace Socks.  Students who are interested in broader exposure may optionally buy the book listed below. Students who buy the book can optionally forego buying the Leaf Lace Socks pattern and instead design their own sock pattern from the elements found in the book. The instructor will set up a Ravelry group for students after the class to ask follow up questions and show off their finished socks.

Level: Ideally, students should be intermediate knitters and should already be familiar with knitting socks.  Alternatively, if a student is an intermediate knitter and is more interested in just getting experience with knit lace but not necessarily interested in making lace socks per se, that student can still get valuable instruction in beginning lace knitting in this course.

Registration necessary, class size limited to 20

Supplies Needed to complete a pair of lace socks:

Each student should have a copy of the Leaf Lace Socks (AC-58) pattern available as a Ravelry download ( or the book  Getting Started Knitting Socks, which can be bought from Amazon.

The book is an excellent reference for those who would like to delve more deeply into lace sock design after the course.

Students will also need:

A set of 4 size 1.5 or 2 double pointed needles, 100 grams of sock yarn of their choice, DK weight or finer, a stitch counter, a stitch holder, a crochet hook, a tapestry needle, scissors, some paper, and a pen

Materials Fee:   None

Homework:  None before the class. The students will finish up their socks on their own after the class.  The instructor will set up a Ravelry group for students to ask follow up questions and show off their finished socks.

A 3.00 electronic administrative fee will be added for all online registration transactions.
