Join us as we learn the traditional art of Nalbinding. This technique is also referred to as the Amish knot method, and the toothbrush method, and is one of the oldest rag rug methods known. We will be using a toothbrush tool in class, learning to make rugs with materials of your choice: rags, fabrics, ribbons, yarns, etc. You’ll learn the basics of traditional rug making techniques and learn a few contemporary techniques to create a beautiful fabric basket and it’s sure to look great among your traditional baskets too! The instructor will demonstrate the use of other tools in class and have many examples of baskets to inspire you for the next basket you’ll make. Materials needed in this class will be your choice of fabrics with some essential supplies needed. Instructor will have some additional supplies on hand for sale should you not be able to bring all that you need.
Registration necessary, class size limited to 20
Supplies needed: Quilter’s safety pins (for fabrics), OR large stitch markers (for yarns), clipboards, fabric shears or scissors for yarns tape measure. Your choice of fabric, ribbons, yarns or roving. Fabric strips must be torn into 1 1/2 inch strips (18″ or longer) and bulky weight yarn is preferable. (thinner yarns and ribbons can be doubled) (pencil roving acceptable)
Materials Fee: $8.50, for instructions and the “Toothbrush tool” payable to teacher in class, (other tools and materials will be available for purchase in class from instructor)
Homework: Cut or tear fabric into 1 1/2 inch strips, 18 ” or longer
